By Rinkesh Shah, founder of Cellgrids.

The question

The records start under a header in row 1. Count the customer records in column A without counting the header, using the whole column A:A. Put it in D2.

The data

ABCD
1CustomerStatusResult
2AshaPaid?
3Ravi
4Pending
5KaranPaid
6Divya
7
8ImranPending
9SunitaPaid

The yellow cell is where your answer goes.

Show answer

Answer in D2: 6

How it works

Explanation: COUNTA(A:A) counts the header too, so subtract 1. The formula keeps working when you add more rows.
Syntax: =COUNTA(A:A)-1
7 filled cells in column A (including the header) minus 1 = 6.
