By Rinkesh Shah, founder of Cellgrids.

The question

The store was closed one day, so that day shows 0. Using AVERAGE, find the average daily sales for the five days (zero included) and put it in B7.

The data

AB
1DaySales
2Mon7000
3Tue6500
4Wed0
5Thu8000
6Fri7500
7Average?

The yellow cell is where your answer goes.

Show answer

Answer in B7: 5800

How it works

Explanation: A zero is a real number, so AVERAGE counts it. This lowers the average compared with leaving the cell blank.
Syntax: =AVERAGE(B2:B6)
(7000 + 6500 + 0 + 8000 + 7500) / 5 = 29000 / 5 = 5800. If Wednesday were blank, the result would be 7250.
