The question

The slab starts are sorted from small to large. Using MATCH with an approximate match, find which slab the income in D2 falls into (slab 1 is the first row) and put it in E2.

The data

ABCDE

20600000?
3250000

51000000

The yellow cell is where your answer goes.

Answer in E2: 3

How it works

Explanation: Match type 1 finds the largest value that is less than or equal to the lookup value. The list must be sorted from small to large.
Syntax: =MATCH(D2,A2:A5,1)
600000 is above 500000 but below 1000000, so the slab starting at 500000 is the one. That is the 3rd row, so the answer is 3.

MATCH syntax

=MATCH(lookup_value, lookup_array, [match_type])
