By Rinkesh Shah, founder of Cellgrids.

The question

Check whether the invoice number typed in E2 is in the list. Show Found if it is and Missing if it is not, and put the result in F2.

The data

ABCDEF
1InvoiceCheckResult
2INV-201INV-207?
3INV-202
4INV-203
5INV-204
6INV-205
7INV-206

The yellow cell is where your answer goes.

Show answer

Answer in F2: Missing

How it works

Explanation: MATCH gives a number when it finds the value and an error when it does not. ISNUMBER turns that into TRUE or FALSE, and IF turns it into a label.
Syntax: =IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH(E2,A2:A7,0)),"Found","Missing")
INV-207 is not among INV-201 to INV-206, so MATCH returns an error, ISNUMBER gives FALSE and the result is Missing.
