By Rinkesh Shah, founder of Cellgrids.

The question

Months are listed in rows 2 to 7. Using SUM with INDEX, add the sales from January up to the month number typed in F2 and put the result in F3.

The data

ABCDEF
1MonthSalesUp to month #
2Jan120004
3Feb15500Total?
4Mar14200
5Apr16800
6May18100
7Jun19400

The yellow cell is where your answer goes.

Show answer

Answer in F3: 58500

How it works

Explanation: INDEX can return a cell reference, so B2:INDEX(B2:B7,F2) builds a range that ends at the month you choose. Change F2 and the total updates.
Syntax: =SUM(B2:INDEX(B2:B7,F2))
F2 is 4, so the range is B2:B5: 12000 + 15500 + 14200 + 16800 = 58500.
