The question

In a judged contest, the highest and lowest scores are dropped. Using SUM, MAX, MIN and COUNT, find the average of the remaining scores and put it in B7.

The data

AB
1JudgeScore
2Judge 18.5
3Judge 29
4Judge 37.5
5Judge 49.5
6Judge 58
7Final?

The yellow cell is where your answer goes.

Show answer

Answer in B7: 8.5

How it works

Explanation: To drop the extremes, take them off the total and reduce the count by 2. Then divide what is left by what remains.
Syntax: =(SUM(range)-MAX(range)-MIN(range))/(COUNT(range)-2)
Total = 42.5. Remove 9.5 and 7.5 leaves 25.5. Count is 5 - 2 = 3. 25.5 / 3 = 8.5.
