The question

Actual sales are in B2:B6 and budget in C2:C6. Show the variance as a decimal ((actual - budget) / budget), rounded to 3 decimals, in E2:E6.

The data

ABCDE

2North118000110000?
3South9250095000?
4East101200100000?
5West8740090000?
6Central6430060000?

The yellow cells are where your answer goes.

Show answer

Expected results:

  • E2 = 0.073
  • E3 = -0.026
  • E4 = 0.012
  • E5 = -0.029
  • E6 = 0.072

How it works

Explanation: Variance percent shows how far actual is from budget, as a share of the budget. A negative number means the region is below budget.
Syntax: =ROUND((B2-C2)/C2,3)
North is +0.073 (7.3% above budget) and South is -0.026 (2.6% below).
