Excel Statistical Functions: Full List with Examples

By Rinkesh Shah, founder of Cellgrids.

Statistical functions count, average, rank and measure spread in your data. COUNTIF, AVERAGEIF, MAX, MIN and RANK are the everyday ones. Open any function for its syntax, arguments, a worked example and a free practice spreadsheet.

RANK + IF (conditional rank)A workaround using SUMPRODUCT to rank a value only among rows that meet a certain condition, since RANK alone can't filter.
COUNTIFS with OR logic (multiple SUMs)COUNTIFS only supports AND logic natively — adding two COUNTIFS together is the standard workaround for an OR condition.
AVERAGE + IFERRORWraps AVERAGE in IFERROR to avoid a #DIV/0! error when the range is empty.
Two COUNTIFs multiplied (AND workaround)COUNTIFS natively supports AND logic across multiple ranges in one formula (the correct, simpler alternative to nesting COUNTIF calls).
COUNTIF + ISNUMBER (data quality check)Counts only the cells that genuinely contain numbers, catching text-formatted numbers that COUNT would miss.
